Assessment and Management of the Dizzy Patient

Kathy Grimsby, PT, MPT, MOMT of Balance PLUS Physical Therapy in San Diego, presented her techniques and viewpoints on the assessment and management of clients with dizziness and balance disorders from diverse causes. Ms. Grimsby emphasized a thorough orthopedic and neurologic evaluation to reveal underlying factors not readily apparent which might be contributing to a patient's balance problems. She reminded her physical therapy audience of the importance of screening for and alleviating orthopedic factory such as dysfunction of the cervical spine and limited range of motion of the lower extremity joints in addition to identifying standard neuroligic problems present in clients with balance disorders. She highlighted her approach with a presentation of an actual client who benetifed from this dual approach of treating cervical and lumbar restrictions with orthopedic manual techniques while also addressing neurologic issues through habituation and postural exerises.
